What to consider about light distribution when choosing table lamps and ceiling lamps

Light distribution is one of the most important characteristics to consider when choosing lighting. It is not just about how much light a lamp provides, but how that light is distributed, which areas it covers, the atmosphere it creates in a room, and how it affects the eyes. Here, we walk through the key points—with a focus on the lamps we sell.

1. Ceiling lights (pendants/ceiling lights)

Our pendant lights are designed to provide soft, directed illumination, offering excellent general or task lighting without causing glare. Things to consider: Direction and spread: The lamps feature multiple shades that direct light downwards and outwards in a controlled manner. This creates a soft, diffused glow that covers a wide area beneath the fixture, free from harsh shadows or direct glare. Glare protection: The upper and lower shades effectively shield the eyes from direct light. This makes them ideal for use above dining tables, coffee tables, or workspaces—areas where you might occasionally look upwards.

Height and placement:

The higher the lamp is hung, the larger the illuminated area. A recommended height from the floor is 170–180 cm. Brightness: Opt for a dimmable LED bulb for added flexibility. These lamps work well as a primary light source in smaller rooms, or as supplementary lighting in larger spaces. Benefits of our pendant lights: They provide a pleasant, “architectural” quality of light that feels both luxurious and relaxed. They are particularly well-suited for rooms where you want to avoid the typical, “flat” overhead lighting often produced by standard spotlights or flush-mount ceiling fixtures.

2. Table lamps

Our table lamps are primarily designed for decorative lighting—to create atmosphere and illuminate a specific area of a room.

Things to consider: Primarily decorative lighting: The lamps cast a beautiful, directional light both upwards and downwards through their distinctive shades. They create elegant cones of light and plays of shadow that enhance your interior decor, adding depth and character to the room. Secondary reading function: Although primarily decorative, they work perfectly as reading lights next to an armchair or bed. The light is sufficiently focused downwards to illuminate a book or magazine without disturbing the surrounding space. Placement: Position the lamp so that the light falls where you want it (e.g., beside a sofa or in a corner).

Keep in mind that the light spreads both upwards (towards the ceiling) and downwards, creating a softer overall ambiance compared to a standard table lamp with a focused beam. Glare: The design of the shades provides effective protection against glare from the sides and above; however, avoid placing them directly at eye level if you are sitting nearby. Tips for the best effect: Opt for a warm-white light (2700–3000K) to create a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Use a dimmer to easily switch between decorative mood lighting and brighter light for reading.

General advice for light distribution

Layer your lighting – Always use at least two layers: general lighting (ceiling lights) combined with ambient and task lighting (table or floor lamps). Our lamps complement each other perfectly. Avoid glare – Always choose lamps with well-designed shades (like ours). Direct light hitting your eyes causes rapid fatigue. Room size and ceiling height – In rooms with low ceilings, pendant lights provide a more focused beam. In rooms with high ceilings, they can be hung lower to achieve better light distribution.

Light color and intensity – Use warm white light for living rooms and bedrooms. Opt for cooler light (4000K) if you need more functional task lighting. Shadows and reflections – Our multi-layered shades create soft transitions and subtle shadows, bringing the room to life rather than leaving it looking flat. Keep in mind that our black lamps reflect less light; if you want to brighten an area significantly, it is better to choose a different color.

Summary

Our ceiling lights are excellent for providing comfortable, glare-free general and task lighting, featuring a soft, directional glow. Our table lamps are designed to offer beautiful decorative lighting that also serves as a practical aid for reading. By combining a ceiling light with one or two table lamps from the same collection, you create a harmonious and well-considered lighting scheme in your room—one that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
